Today we'll be taking a look at something different, if you usually watch and read our video and written reviews, you will know that we review handsets, but today we'll be reviewing a must-have accessory. As the name suggests, this product is a desk stand, but not just any desk stand, this product features an 8 in 1 SD card reader, two USB ports and you can even charge your handset, these features can be used whenever this product is connected to a computer using the cable given.
The Desk Genie was kindly sent to us by MobileFun to review. This product was £14.99 but is now down to £11.95, MobileFun applies a small delievery charge (depending on the delievery option you select). Read through this article to find out more about the Desk Genie.
The Desk Genie came in a very colourful cardboard box. Inside the box you get the Desk Genie itself, a manual, a USB cable and a number of mobile chargers/adaptors that is intended to fit most handsets.
The manual was very informative with information on how to use the Desk Genie in general, how to use this product as a USB port(s) and card reader(s). Having said this, this manual was not very helpful on how to charge your handset using this product. You can take a look at this manual in full by clicking here.
The USB cable can be pluged into the back of the Desk Genie, and the other side into a computer. As soon as this USB cable is connected you will be able to use the USB port(s), SD reader(s) and the great charging abilities for your handset.
You'll also find yourself a plastic bag with different types of handset adaptors/chargers, they should fit a significant amount of phones available on the market today. For a whole list of handset adaptors/chargers, check out the list on the bottom part of the product page by clicking here. The cable at the bottom of this picture is to be connected to the handset adaptors/chargers, and then pluged into the back of the Desk Genie.
The stand itself is made from plastic and is in a fashionable design. The base holds two USB ports on one side and the card reader on the other. You can’t see it here because you will need to connect the USB cable, but the front of the stand has a blue LED, which lights up when charging. It measures 59 x 102 x 106mm and weighs 95g.
The back of the Desk Genie has a mini USB port and DC power jack. The USB port is connected to your PC and the power jack is connected to your mobile using the short cable described above.
The left side of the base holds the 8-in-1 card reader. There are 4 slots that allows you to transfer files from a number of different formats including SD, MMC, MicroSD and M2 cards.
The right side of the base holds two USB 2.0 ports that can be used as a hub for your PC. These ports can be used with USB memory sticks.
The Desk Genie is simply just a charging device only, it cannot be used to sync to your PC, which is the main disappointment. If you had been able to power your device whilst having access, it would been an even more bigger hit.
As a charging device it works excellently and the additional features of a USB hub and card reader is much more than a phone holder. The non-slip surface also works well, essentially you can place your mobile in almost any position and it won’t come off.
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by the Desk Genie, if syncing to your PC isn’t a priority than it comes recommended. We give this product a 9 of 10 star rating.
